Strictly speaking this Gull-billed Tern painting should belong in my Egypt collection, since I saw it and did the preliminary sketches during my Egypt field trip in 2008. I'd been commissioned to illustrate a research project investigating the wildlife species depicted in Ancient Egypt. We had a hectic six-week tour visiting museums and historic sites across the country, rising early to work before the sun got too intense. We'd return to the hotel in the afternoon, hot, tired and dusty. After freshening up it was absolute bliss to sit by the banks of the Nile with a cool drink watching the Gull-billed Terns soaring and swooping for insects. As always I had my sketchbook handy. I tried to capture the sense of freedom and the beautiful light as the sun descended over the Nile. This
