Wheatears are special. Dapper little birds, with striking plumage and an alert, upright stance. This one was sketched and photographed on Lundy Island. I was inspired by the contrasts in this image: the light and shade, the living bird against inanimate stone, sleek feathers against the roughness of rock, the permanence of the landscape against the fleeting life of a migrant. Plus it was a lot of fun exploring those contrasts in paint.
